“Power to the People” began as a political slogan in the 1960s. Used by the younger generation, it was a form of rebellion directed against the older generation, those in charge – The Establishment! As often it happens, history does repeat itself. We are once again experiencing a rebellion. This time around, those sticking it to the man are the music fans. The establishment they are rebelling against – The Recording Industry!
Make no mistake, the fans are in control. What started over 10 years ago with Shawn Fanning’s ill fated Napster, has become one of the largest and most successful grass roots movements in known history. Peer to peer file sharing (deemed piracy by the powers that be) continues to be a thorn in the side of major record label executives. In fact, it has all but brought the industry to its knees. Networking is the bread and butter of a freelance career. Because competition is so fierce, landing consistent gigs isn’t just about talent. It relies heavily on who you know, and how connected you are.
A couple things that immediately rubbed me the wrong way was
the templates available for download in the “Customize Your Band Profile” section all have top banner/video layouts.
a link in the “Make The Most Out Of Myspace” section called ‘Use Myspace As Your Official Website’.
Why would Myspace be your official website? That just blows my mind. As far as the templates, I believe the music player should be the first thing that visitors see. Fans come to your profile for your music, first and foremost!
Everything else on the support page appears to be pretty generic stuff. But don’t take my word for it, check it out!
Yes, this is open to music sites worlwide! Because we DO love our international users too!
So HeavyAsHell is a great way to promote your site. Sure some of you have fallen in love with posting links. We thank you for that. But what about making sure those links get voted to the front? How can you make sure that your content has a better chance at getting attention here? Well what about using our API?

Most of you youngins won’t remember, but on August 1, 1981, at 12:01am, MTV changed the music world as we know it. Originally slated to be to be “Music Television”, hosted by VJs playing videos 24/7/365, that has long been abandoned. Moving ahead 28 years or so, online video sites are as popular as ever. I wonder if MTV can be duplicated? Continue reading »
What have you done to actively recognize your fans? What do you do on any given day to keep your band fresh in their minds? More importantly, what have you done to increase sales via fan interaction? Procrastination is a career killer! Don’t wait for CD Baby or iTunes to sell your music. Don’t expect fans to patiently wait for your next release. Make them a part of it! Continue reading »
Most of you will have noticed that I’ve placed a ‘Subscribe’ button on the top of the sidebar. This will allow readers to easily subscribe to the blog via RSS or email. Just below that, I’ve added social networking icons which are linked to my outlying sites. Please feel free to join me on Digg, Facebook, Flickr, Last.fm, LinkedIn, Myspace, StumbleUpon, Twitter, YouTube, and of course, Metal Music Promotions. Let’s continue to make Wicked D’s Network a community effort by utilizing the “Share/Save” button at the bottom of each post.
Thanks for plugging into The Network. Y’all freaking ROCK!
