There’s been a lot written recently about “crowd funding,”  a term born of another internet buzz word “crowd sourcing.”  Crowd funding is as simple as it sounds.  It simply means to fund a project by gaining small donations from a large group of people.

What have you done to actively recognize your fans?  What do you do on any given day to keep your band fresh in their minds?  More importantly, what have you done to increase sales via fan interaction?  Procrastination is a career killer!  Don’t wait for CD Baby or iTunes to sell your music.  Don’t expect fans to patiently wait for your next release.  Make them a part of it!

In my opinion, the ‘Direct to Fan’ business model may very well represent the future of the music industry.  I believe this, despite those whom argue it only works for bands with past major label backing and an established fan base, such as NIN or Radiohead.  My response?  Independent artists don’t need millions of fans to be financially successful.  Furthermore, bypassing the label (and all middlemen involved) nets the artist a much higher personal profit per unit sold.
